Torque converters are a great invention.

In yesterday I was taking part old equipment that were removed from their duties at work. One very large blower assembly had a Voith fluid coupling mounted on its 75 kW electric motor. It was extremely heavy. I didn’t weigh it but ~100 kg is my rough guess.
It’s basically a torque converter to easen up the starting process as the motor didn’t have any sophisticated inverter drive.

I’ve recently been fixing up an ex-military IVECO EuroTrakker that’s been converted into a tow rig, which has a Turbo Clutch infront of its conventional 16-speed transmission and mechanical clutch for setting o ff, which got me interested in these.

I guess this is semi common feature in heavy military trucks. Finnish built Sisu SA-240 had a ZF built manual with a torque converter. I haven’t driven with these as our unit only had the 2 axled little brothers that had a conv entional clutch.
